Have a Gaudí Day

24 Feb

On days like this, when it’s cloudy and cold,  I wish I had a magic Genie that could grant me three wishes.  I don’t even need all three, I really just want one.  Take me back to Barcelona, Spain. I traveled throughout Europe last summer, and Barcelona was one of my favorite cities.  For one, I speak the language, well at least Spanglish, and two it’s the perfect mixture of an urban city and seaside town.  I live right outside of Washington, D.C. so that description can technically describe my area as well, but what makes Barcelona completely different is its atmosphere.  The culture is so unbelievably rich, filled with music, theatre, and some of the most beautiful architecture I’ve ever seen.

In fact, I dedicated an entire day, I named it my Gaudí Day, to the work of one of, if not the most influential Architects in Barcelona, Antoni Gaudí.  His work is so amazingly detailed that I could barely capture the beauty of his art in one single shot.

I started my day at la Casa Batlló, a house situated on the famous Passeig de Gràcia, constructed for the Batlló family.  As I walked through the house I couldn’t help but notice all of its intricate detail, like for instance the beautiful blue walls that led up to the roof.  He framed the glass barriers around the stairs, so that at any given point it would give the appearance of moving water.  I still cannot believe that a family lived in this house, as it is like stepping into a fantasy world. The Brick-Bringing an Eastern Market Favorite Home

21 Feb

Oh, Eastern Market, how I love thee.  No, really I do, it’s probably one of the best outdoor (and indoor) farmer’s markets in the area.  Problem is, it’s about a 30 – 45 minute drive from my house, and I won’t even begin to talk about parking.  If I could I would go every day, just to pick up some fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables from local farmers.  Maybe even eat a crepe, or stand in line at Market Lunch, on a Saturday morning. Well, if I could skip the line, in a VIP kind of way, I would totally do it.  However, I don’t see that happening anytime soon, so I’ll just wait like everyone else.

My Valentine’s Baby

14 Feb

I don’t really have a Valentine’s baby, but my BFF does!  My Zsa Zsa, as I have nicknamed her, turned one yesterday. To celebrate her born day, I made her a giant cupcake cake, accompanied by red velvet and vanilla cupcakes.  It was my first attempt at making and using fondant, and let me just say this was a labor of love.  I know that it will never compare to what my BFF went through on the day Zsa Zsa was born, but it was exhausting.    Continue reading

The Elusive Tortilla–Mastering the Art of Tortilla Making

12 Feb

My Mother was an amazing cook.  She loved trying new recipes, and tasting new dishes.  Especially the Salvadorean cuisines my Father’s family cooked for her.  However, there was one food that she loved, but could never quite master.  That dish is what I affectionately call her elusive tortilla.    She was always on the hunt, trying to figure out how to make these little “flatbreads”. She bought presses, asked coworkers, badgered random people on the street, can you say embarrassing for me and my sister, but ultimately she never learned how to make tortillas.  So, I figured, I would pick up where she left off, besides going up to random people on the street, I also wanted to learn how to make these treats.
