My Valentine’s Baby

14 Feb

I don’t really have a Valentine’s baby, but my BFF does!  My Zsa Zsa, as I have nicknamed her, turned one yesterday. To celebrate her born day, I made her a giant cupcake cake, accompanied by red velvet and vanilla cupcakes.  It was my first attempt at making and using fondant, and let me just say this was a labor of love.  I know that it will never compare to what my BFF went through on the day Zsa Zsa was born, but it was exhausting.   I spent my Saturday night and Sunday morning (I didn’t go to sleep until 3:30 am on Sunday), trying to prepare her cake. Now that it’s over, and I have some time to reflect, I can absolutely say that I would do it again.  Zsa Zsa is full of light, with a smile that can brighten anyone’s day.  I stayed up all night, because of that smile, and because I know she means the world to her parents.  Over the past year, I have seen my BFF grow and become one of the best mother’s I know, and making her cupcakes is the least I could do, for such an amazing baby, and the best friend anyone could ask for.

So, on this Valentine’s Day, instead of filling myself up with candy and chocolates, I’m filled with the love of my friends and family.  Happy 1st Birthday Zsa Zsa, keep shining bright.

Red Velvet and Vanilla Cupcakes

So Cute!

I bought the heart picks at the Dollar Store.  I love that place!

I made the base out of chocolate.

Here is where I got some of my inspiration and recipes for Zsa Zsa’s Valentine’s Birthday Cake and Cupcakes:

Bakerella’s Red Velvet and Vanilla Cake

My Mom’s Cream Cheese Frosting

Martha Stewart’s Meringue Butter Cream Frosting (infused with almond extract)

YouTube – for tutorial on fondant (gotta love YouTube)

Thanks Boogie! It’s just a link to YouTube because I researched the crap out of the subject and couldn’t pick one specific tutorial. I made both marshmallow and “regular” fondant, and I’ll e-mail you the link to the recipe I used.
P.S. Can we have a cupcake swap? 😉
